A great white tearing through golden hour on the SA coast 🌅🌊🦈

I came across this efficient raptor whilst in a bird hide at Gluepot Reserve in South Australia. I had spent the morning watching honeyeaters, parrots and various other woodland birds drink from a water trough, when out of nowhere, all took flight in a wave of chaos, feathers and alarm calls. Seconds later this impressive collared sparrowhawk landed at the trough, clearly identifying what all the fuss had been about. It was great to see this often illusive predator up close, enjoying a drink and a bath before the heat of the day 🦅

|| Release || A grey headed flying fox, taking flight as it is released back to its camp at the Botanic Park in Adelaide City.

I had the pleasure of again working with the very talented wildlife vet Dr Wayne Boardman and his team at the University of Adelaide on a grey headed flying fox research survey over the weekend. 50 individuals were caught and processed in an effort to understand the ecology and possible viruses the animals may be carrying. Furthermore, the research allows an insight into the overall health of the colony, their levels of dehydration in the summer months, condition, age, feeding patterns and sex. Once processed, all animals were successfully released to rejoin the camp.

This colony of grey headed flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) is relatively new to Adelaide, establishing itself around 2010. Originally found in the eastern states of Australia, the Adelaide camp of now roughly 10,000 made the move southwards due to changing/altered food and water resources. Listed nationally as vulnerable, the grey headed flying fox is Australia’s largest bat 🦇 🖤

There is nothing like shooting fast paced wildlife with a quick shutter speed! It allows me to get an idea of the moments that make up the chaos. It’s also a great way of understanding how the animal operates... I am able to see all the small details that make up their intricate design, and how they put their tools to use.

Black Flying-fox - Ord River, Kimberley WA

It can be pretty chaotic at times around a flying-fox camp, especially around dusk and dawn, and if spooked. Screeching fills the air and the sky becomes swarmed with bats dodging and weaving each others path. It is pretty exciting to watch and a good way to practice in-flight photography. Just watch you don’t pull your neck out as you dart from bat to bat trying to get focus 😳🌪

A couple of rainbow bee-eaters looking impressive in the early morning light. No matter how many of these guys I see, they always make me crack a smile 😁

Wyndham, WA

An awesome night on the coastal cliffs of Hallett Cove with @sa_elements tracking down thick-tailed geckos. Safe to say this species is abundant in the area, with roughly 80 individuals spotted in a short 2 hours of exploring. Most were found in pose awaiting insects to ambush.

A beautifully coloured and patterned gecko when viewed up close. Underwoodisaurus milii, one of two geckos within the genus 'underwoodisaurus. These guys can be found commonly across southern Australia.

A northern quoll passing me by as it scales the rocky terrain of the Mitchell Plateau. The Mitchell River National Park in Western Australia's Kimberley region showcases an environment untouched and dominated by its traditions of floods and bushfires. The massive amount of water that passes through the area as it heads to sea has carved towering gorges and waterfalls that seem to split the plateau apart. This wild part of the country provides a stronghold for some of the regions most threatened animals, just like this endangered northern quoll.

Back on the SA coast for a bit. Looks good!

I was lucky enough to help out during a freshwater turtle survey at the @australianwildlifeconservancy 's Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary in the Kimberley last year. The survey collects data on new individuals, size, crocodile damage and reproductive status in order to track the heath of turtle populations over time. The small individual shown here is a Northern Red-faced Turtle (Emydura victoriae) and was estimated at less than 6 months old. Turtles found in this area are often larger in size when compared to populations in other areas of Australia, due to greater food supply and the pristine, nutrient rich waterways of the Kimberley. These surveys are a great tool for monitoring the overall health of a population over time and allow researchers to understand stature as ecosystems change and develop.

A beautiful sandstone long-necked turtle (Chelodina burrungandjii) we found while cooling off in one of the crystal clear freshwater ponds of the north-east Kimberley. This species of freshwater turtle is restricted to permanent pools in remote sandstone environments and is only found in a small pocket of north WA and the Arnhem Land Plateau in NT, so we were pretty happy to find this large, healthy female in a pond just a few metres from our camp.

Found in a pristine spring fed waterhole in @australianwildlifeconservancy ’s Charnley River Wildlife Sanctuary. Just one of the many species able to flourish in this valuable protected area. Spending their life either upside down in trees or in the air, flying-foxes need to be creative in how they source a drink. An effective way to wet the whistle is by swooping low along waterways, dipping down and collecting water on their belly fur. Once wet, the thirsty flying-fox can then pull up on a tree and lick the water from the belly!

Short-eared rock wallaby

I had a cool encounter with a female short-eared rock wallaby (Petrogale brachyotis) and her young joey a few nights back. It was quite high up an escarpment in the eastern end of Gregory/Judbarra National Park in the Northern Territory, when this female came to a rock edge next to me. We almost followed each other as I made my way down, and each time I would stop the mother would pause also, giving her joey a chance to surface from the pouch and look around. The joey could not take its' eyes off me, and it felt nice knowing that I was probably the first human it had come across. The mood remained really relaxed and the mother allowed me to lean in and a get a few photos before we split ways :)

The short-eared rock wallaby can be found across tropical north Australia from the Kimberley to the NT-QLD border amongst rocky environments.

This green tree frog thought the back of our deck chair was a nice spot to set up for the night - Timber Creek, NT 🚪🐸🚪
